Dallas Mavericks cover their bases on defense

For years, we've heard that good defense in the NBA is defined by field-goal
percentage.
Hold opponents to 42 percent shooting, and you are nasty, hard-nosed
defensive bloodhounds.
Give up 46 percent on a regular basis, and you're just lottery-bound dogs.
The Mavericks keep track of that stat, just like all teams. But they also use
a different yardstick to measure their defensive success or failure.
Points per possession has become the new, trendy number to gauge how a team
is doing defensively – and offensively, too. The reason is that both teams
get approximately the same number of possessions in a game. If one team has
100 possessions, the opponent is going to have somewhere between 98 and 102.
The discrepancy could come if a team starts and finishes a quarter with the
ball.
But for the most part, it's an equal playing field, as opposed to shooting
percentage. In Saturday's game against Atlanta, for instance, the Hawks took
89 shots and the Mavericks had 67. Clearly, the field-goal percentage on
defense for the Mavericks, which was excellent at 36 percent, was skewed by
the fact that they gave up so many more shots.
That also was the first game the Mavericks lost this season when out-shooting
an opponent.
"We believe it is a better indicator," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Points per
possession is a finite number each time you have the ball. If you win a game,
you're going to have a better points per possession on offense than the other
team."
So what is a good points-per-possession average defensively?
"Anything around one or less is good," Carlisle said. "Nobody in the league
had an average under one last year for the season. Offensively, anything at
1.1 or 1.05 or higher is generally pretty positive.
"But again, it varies a little with the opponent, the style of play and all
that stuff. But the number of possessions is consistent for either team every
night."
Points per possession is a relatively new statistic. Many teams still believe
field-goal percentage is the best way to grade a team's defense. But Roland
Beech, the Mavericks' director of basketball analytics, said points per
possession is gaining in popularity.
Beech said every team this season has an average between 1 and 1.14.
The Mavericks were in the top 10 both offensively and defensively until their
recent two games, when they set consecutive season lows for points. Against
the Hawks, the Mavericks had 86 possessions and 75 points, a ridiculously low
.882 points per possession.
All the players know is the offense looks broke right now, and it will take
more than statistics to fix it.
"If you shoot the ball like we did the last two games, we got to figure
something out," Dirk Nowitzki said. "But we'll be all right. We'll take the
shots if they're there, and if not, run the pick and roll a little better."
Nash still at it: This is the sixth season since Steve Nash left the
Mavericks via free agency for Phoenix, and he just keeps getting better with
time.
He's averaging 17 points and 11.1 assists.
"It all starts with Nash," Nowitzki said. "We all know that. He's probably
playing as well now as he has his whole career. Against great players, you
never give them one look for 48 minutes. You got to mix it up, and I'm sure
that's what we'll do."
Just another game for Marion: Shawn Marion played more than eight seasons
with the Suns, but after a couple years of playing elsewhere, he's moved on.
"I had a big part of my career there, but it's in the past," he said. "I'm a
Dallas Maverick."
Marion knows the Phoenix style of offense as well as anyone and says the Mavs
have to be ready to take advantage of the opportunities they get.
"They get the ball up the floor really fast," he said. "Teams that run a lot
aren't ready to run back sometimes. So you got to push it at them."
Opening bell: NBA D-League Frisco coach Nancy Lieberman will ring the opening
bell today at the New York Stock Exchange.
It will be the second market a Frisco staff member has opened recently as
president of basketball operations Spud Webb rang the opening bell of the
Canadian Stock Exchange last Wednesday.
Lieberman is in New York to accept the Bill Walsh Champion of Change award
for her philanthropic and athletic achievements.
Nash
Marion
Marion
