Had the Mavericks shriveled up Friday night, it would have sent a terrible
message to fans.
And an even worse message to Dirk Nowitzki.
As it was, the team showed that, while it is not nearly as good without the
best player in franchise history, it does not forget how to fight when he's
not around.
Even after the overtime loss, they were still fighting.
It's a good sign that the Mavericks were formulating a formal protest of the
game because of what owner Mark Cuban called "multiple misapplications of the
rules."
Yes, it was a loss. And it will almost certainly still be a loss after any
review process. But the fight the Mavericks put up was enough to show that
Dirk has some warriors with him.
When Nowitzki went out with 9:27 to go in the second quarter, the Mavericks
were up 28-26. A handful of possessions later, they were down 11 points, as
if they'd forgotten to play without the face of the franchise.
It looked like they were going to go through with a shameful finish against a
Houston team that – let's be honest – will be middle of the road at best in
the Western Conference.
But down the stretch, the Mavericks bowed their backs and forced overtime,
which took a gutsy finish to regulation. In the end they lost, but they
overcame a splotchy offense with salty defense. They didn't get the victory,
but they did earn some respect for the way they played.
