http://tinyurl.com/ybf43au Jason Kidd was in disbelief. Matt Carroll had just won, by Kidd's count, his 11th straight shooting game, this one coming after practice Tuesday. "He owns this court, for sure," Kidd said. That's the problem. It's the Mavericks' practice court that Carroll owns. The real court on which they play games for real, whether it's at American Airlines Center or on the road, has been off limits for Carroll, the reserve shooting guard. Carroll is all the Mavericks have from the $33-million contract they gave Gana Diop before last season. When it became obvious Diop wasn't going to justify that largess, he was dealt to Charlotte for Carroll and Ryan Hollins, who left in free agency. Carroll is in the middle of a long-term contract that stretches out to 2011-12, with a player option for the 2012-13 season. So there is plenty of time for him to become an impact player. And while the pay is good – $4.7 million this season, descending by $400,000 each year over the next three seasons – Carroll is human, which means he wants more. Not more money. More chances to feel like he's helping the team. At this point, Carroll's only impact comes in practices and scrimmages. He's been on the inactive list eight of the last nine games and has played just three minutes in December. He's doing his best to remain upbeat. He's seen Tim Thomas and Kris Humphries go through sitting spells and come back to produce when called upon. In a long NBA season, the seventh-year pro knows that every player gets his chances. "Put it this way, to keep things in perspective, as an NBA player, we have one of the best jobs in the world," he says. "I don't even want to call it a job sometimes. You're doing a game, something you love, which I don't think everybody can say. "But at the end of the day, you want to play and compete. That's the toughest thing. You can only do so many shooting drills and run so many sprints and lift so many weights to stay ready when your opportunity comes. It gets a little monotonous. But that's the part about being a pro – stay focused and try to improve your game every day, like you would if you were playing a lot of minutes." Carroll averaged 12 points and three rebounds in 2006-07 with Charlotte, starting 47 games. But that team had far less talent than this one. The Mavericks are stacked at every position, and Carroll is left to wait for an opportunity. Rick Carlisle has zeroed in on an eight-man rotation the last few weeks, with Drew Gooden, Josh Howard and Jason Terry the only ones off the bench getting consistent time. Thomas and Humphries have gotten spot minutes and have produced. Carroll, Roddy Beaubois, Quinton Ross and James Singleton have been the odd men out during this stretch. But it won't be that way all season. "At some point, we're going to need everybody," Carlisle said. Job fair: The D-League Frisco franchise will have a second job fair today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. Co-owner Donnie Nelson and other team executives will accept resumes for jobs ranging from assistant coaches to interns, and everything in between, Nelson said. The team begins play in November 2010.
