Fans bid Mayday teary farewell

IT was a tearful farewell for Taiwanese rock band Mayday.
Over 40 female fans had gathered at Changi Airport Terminal 2 yesterday morning to send the five members off.
Lead singer Ashin, guitarists Monster and Stone, bassist Masa and drummer Ming are splitting up for two years.
Three of them have to enlist for National Service. They plan to get together again after that.
"We're all very sad because this might be the last time we'll see them together," sniffed Jenny Yeo, 22, founder and chairman of Mayday's local fan club.
"Mayday is like the bridge that bonds us together, so if they're gone, we feel as though something is missing."
Also spotted crying was a group of five female fans from Taiwan, who had flown in to see the band's final gig here last Friday.
But there were some who remained cheerful despite the sniffing and sobbing around them.
Said student Sardonna Giam, 17, who was there with her two sisters: "Two years will pass quite soon. We'll just keep listening to their CDs and watching their videos."
The trio had bought a video camera to record every Mayday moment in Singapore.
At the airport, their camera started rolling when their idols emerged from a van and were mobbed by excited fans.
Some thoughtful ones wrote letters or made gifts for the band.
Student Ginny Kheng folded 730 paper stars and hearts for them - "One for every day I'll miss them when they're away."
DIDN'T SAY MUCH
The usually chatty guys didn't talk much as they were escorted by staff from their record label to the immigration counter.
Ashin hid his sleepy eyes under a cap, while Masa was glued to his mobile phone.
Only Stone seemed chirpy. We spotted a girl grabbing his arm to get his attention!
Before they left for a final round of album promotion in Malaysia, Ashin said: "We'll be back in 2003!"
