目前音樂市場上，就專輯銷售成績或是人氣累積來說，五月天是台灣音樂史上最受歡迎的樂團一點也不為過。五月天希望打破大家對搖滾樂團的既定印象。搖滾樂團不一定要批判、吶喊。但是，在音樂本質上仍保有樂團本身的搖滾精神。他們覺得自己的音樂能受到大眾的肯定，難免會有一些壓力和期望。然而他們仍然堅持親自創作、參與編曲與製作的獨立精神。只要是對的、好的音樂，就應該一直努力下去。

What they had to say about music, speaking English, and success!
職場英語非常難得的訪問到台灣最受歡迎的搖滾樂團─五月天，讓我們來聽聽他們對於音樂、說英語及成功的看法。

問:求學時對英文的觀感如何?
Q：When you were students, how did you feel about studying English?
答：對我們的經驗而言，學校裡學到的英文比較注重考試，應該加強會話能力的提升。有些英文老師本身的發音就不標準。
A：In our experience, English studied in school is geared towards examinations. Most
   Importance should be placed on conversation ability. Also, some of the English teachers pronunciation abilities weren't standard.

問：以前學習英文最大的障礙是什麼? 如何克服學習英文的障礙?
Q：When you studied English, what was your greatest difficulty? How did you overcome it?
答：最大的障礙就是不敢講，不敢開口。克服的方式，就是不要怕開口，因為英語不是我們自己的語言，說不好或是說錯了，外國朋友是不會介意的。
A：My greatest difficulty was that I dared not speak English in front of people. A way to overcome this problem is to be not afraid to speak. English is not our native language. Foreign friends won't care if you don't speak well or if you make mistakes.

問：自己學習英文小撇步?
Q：Do you have any English-learning tips?
答：我們熱愛音樂，所以我們的方式是多聽英文歌曲，然後對照歌詞來聽，這可在無形中加強本身英文的聽力及閱讀能力，自然又沒壓力，效果很好。另一個方式就是多認識外國朋友，不要怕溝通，有說才會進步!
A：We love music very much, so our study method is to listen to English songs and then read the lyrics of the songs. This is a good way to improve our English listening and reading skills. It comes naturally to us, doesn't give us any pressure, and is very effective. Another method is to make more foreign friends. Don't be afraid to have conversations with them. If you speak, you will improve!

問：覺得自己的英文能力，對目前工作有無影響?
Q：Do you think your English skills have an effect on your present job?
答：當然有，因為時常出國演出，有機會認識一些國外的音樂團體，有時演唱會也會請外籍樂師，這些都要靠英語來溝通。
A：Of course. Because we often perform abroad, we have many opportunities to meet foreign bands and play with foreign musicians. We always communicate with them in English.

問：以後會創作純英語的作品嗎?
Q：Do you have any plans to create some English songs?
答：目前不會，會以華語市場為主
A：Not at the moment. Presently, all our songs are for the Chinese-learning market.

問：到目前為止，所創作的歌曲中，那一首創作最適合上班族? 為什麼?
Q：Of all the songs you have created so far, which is most suitable for the working professional?
答：瘋狂世界或憨人，如同歌詞中所寫，雖然你的環境不好，也沒有背景，但是只要努力就有機會成功。
A：Crazy World or Fool. Like the songs say: Regardless of living conditions and family background, if you work hard, you have opportunity to succeed.

Stone's Overseas Study Experience
In 2001, Stone went to England to study at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. One day after class, a classmate told him that someone came looking for him. He was confused. This must be a case of mistaken identity! He didn't have any friends in England.

When he got outside, he saw a fan who had come all the way from China to bring him a JingHua ham. The fan excitedly told him that she made a special trip to see him because she had read in the newspaper that he was studying in Liverpool. When he heard this, Stone felt warmth in his heart, and even more determined to succeed in his studies in England.
When Stone arrived in England, he had only prepared one million NT dollars for tuition and expenses. The cost of living in England is not low (for example, one meal costs around 300-400NT), so for the first three months, Stone ate bread most of the time. His wife sent him a DaTong electric rice cooker to improve his living situation.

With this experience behind him, he suggests making a good study plan before going abroad to study.
