Hanging Up (2000) is definitely getting a disconnect
from the critics. John Anderson in Newsday compares it
to a "low grade fever ... something you wish would
simply end, but you're quite sure will linger on till
... well, till it's over." Jonathan Foreman in the New
York Post figures that the marketing campaign for the
film, including a stylish trailer, will drive
audiences into the theaters anyway. "The ads make it
look like a cheery if shmaltzy First Wives Club-style
comedy about three glamorous sisters learning to deal
with their philandering old father and their own
sibling rivalry," he writes, "But, in fact, the jokes
are few and far between, and the film is really a
depressing, trite and mawkishly Hollywood story about
the death of a creepy old man and its effect on his
spoiled grown-up daughters." Kevin Thomas in the Los
Angeles Times also expresses disappointment in the
movie, writing "Hanging Up has all the ingredients of
a success -- a stellar cast, a promising premise, a
strong production team -- but nothing comes together
in satisfying fashion."
