AILY DISH....
"That's my career: just one big, long bad-hair day," says the
amiable Meg Ryan. "Some of the beginning hair in When Harry Met Sally...
some of those hairdos in Sleepless in Seattle 霠heaven on Earth
霠with the little barrettes..."
The lovable leading lady, currently onscreen in You've Got Mail
and Hurlyburly, first dressed her tresses on the daytime drama As the World
Turns 霠"Heaven. That was good hair, too," the actress recalls
霠putting her soap salary toward journalism-school tuition.
"The fact that I have a body of work cracks me up," says Ryan,
who headed to Hollywood two years into her degree. "I believe in destiny,
because I could never have engineered anything like what I've got, the
kind of opportunities I have or the amazing people who I get to work
with."
Among Ryan's frequent collaborators are screenwriter sisters Nora
and Delia Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, You've
Got Mail), who are also responsible for the upcoming Hanging Up, which
stars Ryan, Lisa Kudrow and Diane Keaton (who also directs)
as three sisters coping with the death of their father.
When the bubbly blonde's not making movies, she's steering projects
through her production company, Prufrock Pictures, and raising
6-year-old Jack Henry, her son with actor-husband Dennis Quaid. "It's
just one day at a time," says Ryan of her happy home life. "And we're
lucky, because Dennis and I really like each other a lot. It's fun to
talk to him, so I am a really incredibly blessed person in that way."
Ryan is equally grounded about her star power. "I don't feel much like
a celebrity," she says. "I can go anywhere; I travel a lot, and I am in
baggage claim like everybody else." 霠Kate Perchuk
