[新聞] Bears Bash Lions / Peng Peaking

Foreign pitchers powered top-of-the-table La New Bears to a
three game sweep of the defending champions Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions
this past week in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Former Baltimore Oriole AARON RAKERS, who pitched last season with the
York (PA) Revolution in the Atlantic League, tossed seven innings and
improved his record to 6-1 this season as the Bears handed the Lions a
narrow 3-2 defeat.

Canada World Baseball Classic pitcher MIKE JOHNSON, making his first
start in the CPBL since his return from the KBO, also tossed seven innings
for the Bears in the 13-3 laugher over the Lions. Johnson had begun the new
season in Korea with SK Wyvern but had been released and re-signed by his
old club. JOSE CASTILLO, the Lions’ replacement Venezuelan third baseman
once of the San Francisco Giants, was a perfect 4 for 4 with 2 RBI and
tallied his third HR of the season in a losing cause. Former Tampa Bay
Devil Rays, Anaheim Angels, and Texas Rangers pitcher MICKEY CALLAWAY
(4-3 w-l) absorbed the defeat for the Lions.

The La New Bears, who have yet to sign a foreign position player now that
TIM RAINES, JR. and his .327 batting average have departed, also toppled
the Lions in between by a 4-1 count this week and now enjoy a two game
lead in the standings. Infielder CHIH-SHENG LIN bashed his 12th HR of the
year for the Bears in that contest. Outfielder LONG-YI HUANG popped a pair
of homers earlier this week against the Brother Elephants and stands at
8 HR for the La New Bears.

Earlier in the week, Castillo, brought in by the Uni-President 7-Eleven
Lions to replace the released Rico Wasington at third base, helped the
Lions lift a 7-5 victory from the Sinon Bulls courtesy a five-run top of
the ninth. Castillo, chosen game MVP, went 2 for 5 with a double and
three RBI. Castillo also was 2 for 3 with another double in the Lions’
3-1 triumph over the Bulls.

One player who had a standout week in the CPBL was the Brother Elephants star
first baseman CHENG-MIN PENG, also known as “Chia Chia”, who whacked three
home runs in three separate ball games (two against the first-placed La New
Bears) for his last-placed club. Peng now has 10 HR on the campaign for the
Elephants, which is two more than the player hit all of last season.
The Chinese Taipei World Baseball Classic man was limited to just 81 games
and 284 at-bats, however, a year ago.

Peng, a highly decorated player, is a four-time CPBL batting champion and
was the league’s top hitter last season with a .391 average. Peng’s single
season mark is the 21 HR he notched two seasons ago (97 ga, 345 ab, .364 avg)
for the Elephants. The 30-year-old has played all eight of his CPBL seasons
(648 ga, 108 HR 432 RBI, .354 avg) for the Elephants and is, among other
things, the club’s all-time home run leader.
