It was a given that Todd Betts would have to leave his home country of Canada
if he wanted to see his dreams come true. At the time, he also understood that
 traveling was part of the lifestyle he was about to choose.

或許只有Todd Betts 離開加拿大這個母國，他才能見到他的夢想成真。同時他也了解到他
將要選擇四處旅行的生活風格。

The Somerset Patriots first baseman was born in East York, Ontario, a part of
 the world that lives and breathes hockey. He, however, wanted to hold a bat
 more than a stick and in most cases, it meant having to move to the United
States to pursue his goal.

這位薩默塞特愛國者隊(譯注:美國獨立聯盟-大西洋聯盟北區球隊之一，不隸屬於任何大聯

"I think when I went to college at Okalahoma, that was a little bit of a test."
 Betts, .268 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI for Somerset this season, said. "That
 was my first time really being away from home."

After being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 14th round of the June 1993
 Major League Baseball Draft, Betts found himself playing in cities all across
the country.

For the first five years of his career, Betts remained with the same team
throughout the season. It was in 1998, however, that he got his first taste of
 an in-season promotion, moving from Double-A Akron to Triple-A Buffalo.

"It's a huge deal because your sleep pattern gets all messed up; you're
catching flights at different times and sometimes you don't even know what day
 of the week it is."

Betts, 32, did play one game for a Canadian team. On April 7, 2000, he suited
up for the Florida Marlins Triple-A affiliate, which was stationed in Calgary.
 Going 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter, that was his only appearance as the
organization felt he was better suited for Double-A Portland (Maine).

現在32歲的貝茲(本文寫作時貝茲32歲)曾經為加拿大的球隊打過一場比賽。在2000年4月7
日，他來到了佛羅里達馬林魚隊的3A卡爾加里大砲隊(Calgery Cannons,主場在加拿大亞伯

In 2003, after stints with the Indians, Marlins, Seattle Mariners and Boston
Red Sox organizations, Betts got an offer he couldn't refuse - a contract to
play in Japan.

在2003年，待過印地安人隊、馬林魚隊、西雅圖水手隊和波士頓紅襪隊球團的貝茲，接受
了一份他非常樂意接受的提議-一紙赴日打球的合約。

"That was the best decision I ever made," Betts said confidently. "I always
wanted to go play overseas... Japan came along with a contract and I was ready
 to leave the next day."

Spending all of that year living in Tokyo, Betts' fiance visited often and the
 only struggle was the language barrier.

"That was pretty much the best time I've had in my whole baseball career."

Last year, Betts returned home to The States and signed a contract to play for
 the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers. His career
as a Yankee minor leaguer last only 44 games, mostly in part because he left
the team in August to play for Team Canada in the Olympic Games.

去年，貝茲回到美國並且和洋基簽下一份合約，加入了紐約洋基隊的3A-哥倫布快艇隊。
然而他在洋基小聯盟只出賽了44場比賽，主要是因為他8月離開球隊去參加奧運棒球的加
拿大代表隊。

As the teammate of current Patriots outfielder Ryan Radmanovich and shortstop
Kevin Nicholson - who coincidently locker next to each other - Betts traveled
to Athens, Greece for what he called an "unbelievable experience."

他的兩位隊友，也湊巧的置物櫃在貝茲的兩隔壁，現在愛國者隊的外野手Ryan
Radmanovich(萊恩‧拉德曼諾維奇)和游擊手Kevin Nicholson(凱文‧尼克森)-貝茲來到希

"Getting to travel through China for the Olympic qualifier and other places,
I would not have seen those places if it wasn't for baseball," Betts said.

He now finds himself in Bridgewater, traveling to cities such as Bridgeport,
Conn. and Nashua, N.H. - much less glamorous than others he's set foot in;
however, isn't that what minor league baseball is all about?

他在Bridgewater，在各個城市裏旅行，像是康乃狄克州的Bridgeport、新罕布夏州的
Nashua-比他以前駐足的地方更沒魅力多了，不過，這也不就是小聯盟嗎?

The man who has yet to reach the majors feels that baseball has allowed himself
 to meet many different people and see a variety of places -- even if it does
mean having to leave his family for prolong periods of time.

這位仍在職棒打球的球員感覺到棒球使他遇見很多不同的人，也使他能親眼見到形形色色
的地方。即使這代表他必須要離開他的家人相當久的時間。

"A lot of the time people say that baseball is more mental than physical and
(being away from home) is one of the reasons why."

很長一段時間人們說棒球是心理層面大過身體層面，而(離鄉背井)就是最好的理由了。
