The Suns might sign an Amaré Stoudemire stunt double this week.
Nine-year NBA veteran Stromile Swift, a 6-foot-10 power forward, will clear
waivers Wednesday and could sign a prorated veteran's minimum contract with
the Suns for the remainder of the season.
Like Swift, Drew Gooden and Joe Smith are free-agent power forwards who were
recently bought out and have the Suns' interest. However, Gooden is expected
to sign with San Antonio while Smith figures to pick Cleveland.
Swift was bought out of his contract with New Jersey on Sunday after playing
in six games this season. He was away from the team for six weeks to tend to
his ailing mother, who died Jan. 27 after a long bout with kidney disease.
Swift, 29, rejoined the team Feb. 16 and was just about ready to return this
weekend before the Nets agreed to give him a chance to play elsewhere.
The Suns need to reach the 13-player roster minimum within a week and are
seeking a big man to replace Stoudemire, who is expected to miss the rest of
the season after surgery on a detached right retina.
Swift played for the Grizzlies most of his career, except for a season in
Houston and two partial seasons with New Jersey. He has averaged 8.5 points,
4.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in his career and is known for his athleticism.
Swift was the 2000 draft's No. 2 pick as a product of Louisiana State, where
Suns center Shaquille O'Neal also played.
The Suns also could re-sign Courtney Sims for the remainder of the season
after he played two 10-day contracts for them.
