Memorable moments
The late '90s did not have a better rivalry in the East than the Heat-Knicks.
Unfortunately for Miami, two of the team's most indelible memories involving
their hated rivals turned out to be forgettable. In the first round of '98, a
fight that broke out between Alonzo Mourning and the Knicks' Larry Johnson in
Game 4 came back to haunt the Heat. The two were suspended for Game 5, and
without their star center the Heat fell, 98-81, in the deciding game.
Then, the next year, there wasn't violence, just Allan Houston's runner
bouncing all over the rim and backboard before falling in at the buzzer in Game
5, giving the No. 8-seeded Knicks the series victory over the top-seeded Heat
-- only the second time in NBA history that an eighth-seed beat a top seed.
…
They called him "Baby Jordan," and, boy, could Harold Miner rattle the rim
when he dunked. But Miner's career fizzled out after a couple of mediocre
years in Miami, one in which he won the slam dunk competition during the
All-Star Game festivities.
Best year: 1996-97
They set a franchise-record with 61 victories during the regular season then
waged battle with the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals, falling 4-1.
Michael Jordan averaged 30 points, and Dennis Rodman led the Bulls in
rebounding in each game, antagonizing the hot-tempered Mourning all the while.
Worst year: 1989-90
It was a rocky road during the franchise's second year as the team racked up
two nine-game losing streaks to go along with a 13-game skid.
