Ainge to be Inducted into Oregon
Sports Hall of Fame

CONSIDERED ONE OF THE FINEST ATHLETES in the history of the state
of Oregon, Phoenix Suns Head Coach Danny Ainge will solidify that
status when he is inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, Saturday,
August 21, at 7:00 p.m.
Ainge grew up in Eugene and led North Eugene High School
to back-to-back state basketball titles and a 53-1 two-year
record in 1976 and 1977. A three-sport star, Ainge earned
high school All-America honors in football, basketball and
baseball.
Following his senior season in high school, he was drafted in
the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by
Toronto. Ainge played three seasons for the Blue Jays while
attending Brigham Young University and starring on the basketball court.
As a senior, Ainge won the John Wooden and Eastman Awards as the top
collegiate player in the nation after averaging 24.4 points.
A 14-year NBA playing career started in Boston as Ainge was selected in
the second round (31st overall) by the Celtics in the 1981 NBA Draft. He
won NBA Championships in 1984 and 1986 with the Celtics and played
in four-straight NBA Finals in Boston. Ainge also appeared in the NBA
Finals with Portland in 1992 and Phoenix in 1993.
Ainge finished his NBA career with 1,002 three-pointers, one of only
three players, along with Dale Ellis and Reggie Miller, to accomplish the
feat at the time of his retirement. He averaged 11.5 points while shooting
.469 from the field and .378 from three-point range in his career.
After completion of his playing career, Ainge moved to the sidelines,
joining the Suns coaching staff in 1996 as an assistant coach. Eight games
into the 1996-97 season, he took over as head coach and led the Suns
from an 0-13 start to a playoff berth. In his first full season, the Suns were
56-26 and had the top turnaround in the Pacific Division.
