Shooting guard is one of the weaker positions in the 2000 NBA
Draft and even the possible inclusion of several talented
underclassmen, still leaves this as a thin position in the draft.
Last season, only three shooting guards were picked in the first
round. They were Richard Hamilton, Trajan Langdon and Dion
Glover. Glover and Langdon have been hampered by injuries
and have played in just 21 combined games. Hamilton missed
eleven games with injuries and is averaging just 7.9 points per
game in his rookie season.
1. Quentin Richardson 6-5 215 SO DePaul
Quentin Richardson thought about coming out early after being named
College Basketball News' Freshmen of the Year. He came back to
DePaul with the hopes of challenging for the Conference USA title.
Unfortunately, he and the Blue Demons have been a bit of a
disappointment this season. Richardson did not score a point in the
first half of his final two Conference USA tournament games. He is an
incredible offensive rebounder who is always around the ball. He often
times got three or four rebounds in one possession. He is a good
outside shooter, but needs to improve his mid range game and
ballhandling. Richardson is undersized as a small forward in the pros
and will have to move to shooting guard in the pros. Richardson has
been comparable to former NBA star Adrian Dantley, due to his
effectiveness around the glass, despite his size and Ray Allen.
Another year of college would benefit his game and allow him to get
DePaul to the next level. Richardson is averaging 16.9 points and 10.1
rebounds per game. He is shooting 43.5% from the field and 37.8%
from three-point range.
2. Courtney Alexander 6-6 200 SR Fresno State
Fresno State's Courtney Alexander contemplated entering the draft, but
decided that a strong senior campaign would elevate his stock and he
made the right decision. Alexander led the nation in scoring with a 25.3
points per game. He is a talented offensive player with good size.
Alexander needs to improve his outside shooting after making 33.3% as
a senior and just 31.6% from beyond the arc as a junior. He was
dismissed from Virginia after a dispute with his girlfriend and was held
out of an early season game in Alaska last year for what was perceived
as an attitude problem, which could scare some teams. However, he
earned his degree this season and has shown more leadership both on
and off the court. Alexander knows how to score and that is a
commodity that is always in demand in the NBA. He is an outstanding
one-on-one player who has been compared to Bonzi Wells. Alexander
was invited to play in the Desert Classic, the biggest of the three
pre-draft camps and is a lottery pick.
3. DerMarr Johnson 6-9 200 FR Cincinnati
Johnson is a tremendous athlete who plays almost effortlessly at times.
In fact, the knock on him has been that he lacks intensity at times. He
is a difficult matchup, due to his 6-9 size at the shooting guard position.
He is a good outside shooter and handles the ball well. He is a good
passer, but needs to cut down his turnovers. There was talk about him
turning pro right out of high school and there will be increased
discussion about him entering the draft after this season. He was
named Conference USA Freshman of the Year. He averaged 12.8
points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
4. Michael Redd 6-5 205 JR Ohio State
Michael Redd also almost came out to the NBA this past season.
However, he wanted to try to get back to the Final Four and decided to
go back to Columbus with star point guard Scoonie Penn. The arrival of
Penn last season made Redd a much more effective player since he did
not have to do everything as he did as a freshman. Penn also gave
Redd some easier looks on the offensive end. Redd is an excellent
athlete who can beat most defenders off the dribble. He is a slasher
who likes to take the ball to the hoop. He is a very good ballhandler with
the ability to create his own shot. He needs to improve his outside
shooting consistency and shot selection. Redd has a scoring mentality,
but sometimes forces bad shots. Redd is an excellent rebounder and
solid defender. Redd is able to draw fouls and has improved his free
throw shooting to take better advantage at the charity stripe. However,
he did not go to the free throw line as often as he had in the past and
was sometimes too reliant on his outside shot. He is averaging 17.3
points (down 2.2 from last season) and 6.6 rebounds and is compared
to Latrell Sprewell and Jalen Rose. He could come back for his
senior season to become Ohio State's all-time leading scorer or be a
likely late lottery pick.
