8. Lamont Long 6-4 190 SR New Mexico
Lamont Long pulled his name out of the draft last year almost
immediately after applying for the annual talent hunt. He showed his
versatility by playing point guard early in the season as a freshman.
Long is a very good ballhandler who can create his own shot. He is an
outstanding rebounder for his size and uses his size advantage well
against smaller player. Long can be a bit streaky at times. Long
averaged 18.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He is
comparable to Cutino Mobley. He will play in the Desert Classic, the
biggest of the three pre-draft camps and is a late first or early second
round pick.
9. Johnny Hemsley 6-5 195 SR Miami (FL)
Johnny Hemsley is a good all-around player who had shown
improvement after his first two seasons, but he has stagnated this year.
He missed two games with injuries and has been held out of two games
by head coach Leonard Hamilton. He is a strong outside shooter with
good size at shooting guard. Hemsley is averaging 18.0 points and 3.6
rebounds this season. He is shooting just 39.4% from the field and
29.9% from the line. He was named to the Desert Classic, the biggest
of the three pre-draft camps and is a second round pick.
10. Bootsy Thornton 6-4 195 SR St. John's
Bootsy Thornton is an outstanding outside shooter who made big
splash last season as a junior college transfer. He recently was named
the Big East Tournament MVP. Thornton is an underrated defender.
Surprisingly, he has struggled from the free throw line, making just
55.3% from the charity stripe. He was chosen to play in the Desert
Classic, the biggest of the three pre-draft camps and is a second round
pick.
Oklahoma State's Glendon Alexander, of St. John's, Xavier's Darnell
Williams, Richie Frahm from Gonzaga, Monty Mack of
Massachusetts, Ross Land of Northern Arizona, Eric Coley from
Tulsa, Oregon's Alex Scales, Jaraan Cornell of Purdue and Richie
Parker from Long Island merit mention as potential draft picks at
shooting guard. Trenton Hassell of Austin Peay, Jimmie 'Snaps'
Hunter from Life (GA) University, Jerryl Sasser of SMU are potential
early entry candidates at shooting guard.
