8. Harold Arceneaux 6-6 215 SR Weber State
Arceneaux was named both Big Sky Newcomer and Player of the
Year after transferring from the junior college ranks last season. His is
an effective scorer around the basket and has a good mid-range game.
He made a name for himself, scoring 36 points in their upset win over
North Carolina and notching 32 points versus Florida. Arceneaux has an
excellent first step and is a very athletic player. He needs to continue to
improve his outside shooting and passing skills to be more comfortable
at the small forward spot in the NBA, but scouts like his scoring ability.
He has bounced back from a slow start (just 14.1 points per game and
44.9% shooting after eight contests) to score 30 or more points seven
times this season. Arceneuax is averaging 22.9 points and 7.3
rebounds per game. He was chosen to the Desert Classic, the biggest
of the three pre-draft camps and is a late first round pick.
9. Kevin Freeman 6-7 235 SR Connecticut
Freeman is a an undersized power forward who struggled this season
as the Huskies moved him to small forward with the loss of Richard
Hamilton. Freeman lacks the perimeter skills and outside shooting to
play that spot and eventually moved back to power forward. He has
excellent strength and powerful hands and uses his quickness well
against bigger power forwards. Freeman gets good offense position and
has improved his mid-range shot. Freeman will play at the Desert
Classic, the biggest of the three pre-draft camps and he is a likely
second round pick in the June NBA Draft. He is averaging 11.4 points
and 5.9 rebounds per game.
10. Ryan Blackwell 6-8 227 SR Syracuse
Blackwell is a former Illinois transfer, who grew up near Illini head
coach Lou Henson. He is a versatile player who can play both
positions. Blackwell is considered a good, but not great athlete. He is a
good passer for his size. His shooting range is effective up to 15 feet,
but he is not much of a three-point threat, just 8 of 30 from three-point
range. Blackwell is an unselfish player who could be a second round
pick in the June NBA Draft. He will play in the Desert classic and is
averaging 11.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
Other seniors to watch include Terrance Roberson from Fresno State,
Florida State's Ron Hale, Ryan and Lavar Postell from St. John's
Underclassmen Shane Battier of Duke, Temple's Mark Karcher,
Bobby Simmons from DePaul, UCLA's JaRon Rush and Lubos
Barton of Valparaiso are among the top young small forwards in the
nation and will be watched by NBA scouts.
