Wisconsin fires basketball coach Soderberg
March 19, 2001
MADISON, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Brad Soderberg is out as interim
basketball coach at Wisconsin just days after the Badgers were
eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Athletics director Pat Richter fired Soderberg on Monday and said
that a search for a new coach would begin immediately.
"It was not something decided over a particular day," Richter said.
"We looked at it collectively."
Soderberg faced the difficult task of replacing Dick Bennett, who
abruptly resigned in late November, citing exhaustion. After advancing
to the Final Four last March, the Badgers went 18-11 this season --
16-10 under Soderberg -- and were upset by Georgia State in the first
round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
Richter said during the season that Soderberg would be a candidate
for the position, but the Badgers' struggles at the end of the Big
Ten Conference season and early exits from the conference and NCAA
Tournaments apparently sealed his fate.
"I didn't want to give him unrealistic expectations," Richter said
of the decision to fire Soderberg so soon after the end of the season.
Wisconsin lost six of its last nine games and was eliminated by
Indiana in its first conference tournament game.
ESPN reported that the Badgers would focus their attention on
Wisconsin native and Utah coach Rick Majerus and Wisconsin alumnus
and California head coach Ben Braun.
Richter said no coach had been offered the job, but hoped to have a
new coach in place by the Final Four in two weeks.
Soderberg played for Bennett at UW-Stevens Point in the mid-1980s.
He came to Wisconsin with Bennett in 1995 after two seasons as coach
at South Dakota State. This was his first season as Bennett's top
assistant.
