The 2001 NBA Draft has been weakened by the early defection of many of its top players. Imagine next year's draft if Tracy McGrady, Larry Hughes, Elton Brand, Ricky Davis, Ron Artest, William Avery, Lamar Odom, Baron Davis, Jumaine Jones, Khaldi El-Amin, Aleksandar Radojevic, Chris Mihm, Marcus Fizer, Michael Redd and Mark Karcher had not turned pro early. These defections have left the 2001 NBA Draft looking thin. Such talk has become common place the last several years as 174 players have kept their name in the NBA Draft the past five years. It is difficult to come up with an All-American team for next season, let alone decide on 29 first rounders. This means that next June, we'll likely be talking about the top freshman, sophomores and juniors entering the draft and there is already talk about some players who will be high school seniors next season bypassing college to turn pro. The following is a look at the top players by position. CENTERS Loren Woods Wake Forest An outstanding shotblocker who needs to get stronger. Showed an improved offensive game as a junior. Decided to return for his senior season after having back surgery. Could lead the Wildcats to a national title. Brendan Haywood North Carolina NBA scouts love his body, but he has not always produced the numbers he should. Good shotblocking presence, who showed more of an offense game this past season. Ken Johnson Ohio State Led the country in shotblocking last season and was granted an extra year of eligibility. Not much of a scoring threat and due to trying to block every shot, he is often out of position to rebound the missed shot. Needs to add strength. Alvin Jones Georgia Tech Shotblocker who had a disappointing junior season. Needs to get stronger and improve his low post game. The loss of first rounder Jason Collier to the pros means that he will need to step up his play. Dan Gadzuric UCLA Good shotblocker who runs the floor well. Unfortunately, he continues to be bothered by knee problems. Has not been the dominant player many expected when he became a Bruin. Steven Hunter DePaul Thin shotblocker who has a big upside. Figures to be more of the focal point of the Blue Demon offense this season as a sophomore. Needs to get stronger and improve his rebounding. POWER FORWARDS Troy Murphy Notre Dame An outstanding outside shooting big man who can also play inside. Better athlete than many give him credit for. Can rebound and block shots and has a good understanding of the game. Zac Randolph Michigan State Could be the country's top rebounding power forward as a freshman. Dominant in the postseason All-Star games as he was named MVP in the all three contests he played in. Was chosen for the Under 20 USA National team. Tyson Chandler Compton (CA) Dominguez H.S. Athletic, wiry big man who runs the floor like a guard. Has expanded his offensive range, but has little low post game. Outstanding shotblocker who changes the dimension of game defensively. Needs to get much stronger and adjust to more physical style of play. Eddy Curry South Holland (IL) Thornwood H.S. Has great strength and is difficult to move or defend in the low post. Needs to watch weight and improve his work ethic. Has great hands and a soft touch around the basket. Kaspars Kambala UNLV Strong inside player with a variety of low post moves. Needs to expand his range and become a better passer. Not afraid of physical play. Brian Scalabrine USC Good inside player who has the ability to step outside and hit the perimeter shot. A hard worker who is a good passer. SMALL FORWARDS Terence Morris Maryland Good all-around player who had a disappointing junior campaign. Needs to show that he wants to be "the man." Has a wide variety of offensive moves. Shane Battier Duke Top defensive player in the country who is not afraid to take the charge. Does a little bit of everything on the court. Jason Kapono UCLA One of the top outside shooters in college basketball. Decided to return to school after putting his name into the NBA draft. Needs to improve quickness and defense to guard the more athletic small forwards. Joe Johnson Arkansas Athletic player who can play both shooting guard and small forward. Did not become eligible for the Razorbacks until the second semester, but was still the SEC's top freshman. Shined in the Under-20 Trials. Richard Jefferson Arizona Can play both small forward and shooting guard. Athletic wing player who has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. Andrew Gooden Kansas Has the size to play power forward, but demonstrated the shooting range to play small forward this summer when he shined at the USA Trials. Needs to be more consistent, but has star potential. SHOOTING GUARDS Joseph Forte North Carolina Became the first freshman to ever lead the Tar Heels in scoring. He can create his shot off the dribble and has excellent shooting range. A good defender who can take the ball to the hoop. Gilbert Arenas Arizona Excellent one-on-one player who was one of the biggest freshman surprises in the country. A bit undersized at the shooting guard spot and he does not have a point guard's game. Solid defender as well as a good scoring threat. Casey Jacobsen Stanford Outstanding outside threat who takes and makes big shots. Has some moxie to his game and is tougher than he looks. His shooting form may not perfect, but he is a deadly outside threat. Needs to get stronger and improve his athleticism. Maurice Evans Texas Transferred to Texas after leading Missouri Valley in scoring at Wichita State. Spend most of his transfer year in the weight room and the work has paid off with a well-sculpted body. LaVell Blanchard Michigan An outstanding athlete and scholar. Has the ability to play both shooting guard and small forward. Can slash to the hoop or hit the outside jumper. Keith Bogans Kentucky Another outstanding freshman from this past season. Has the ability to play several positions, including point guard. Has good strength and excellent shooting range POINT GUARDS Jason Williams Duke Has the ability to score as well as create for his teammates. Has good strength and played for the USA Under 20 team this summer. Jamaal Tinsley Iowa State One of the quickest players in college basketball. Made big impact with the Cyclones as a JC transfer last season. Outstanding defender who needs to become a better three-point shooter. Jason Gardner Arizona Small point guard who knows how to run a team. College Basketball News' Freshman of the Year who follows a strong line of outstanding Wildcat playmakers. Kenny Satterfield Cincinnati Quick point guard who can penetrate and knows how to finish plays. Needs to become a more consistent outside threat. Toyed with the idea of turning pro before returning for his sophomore season. Jerryl Sasser SMU Can be a big point guard in the NBA. Put his name into the draft, but decided to return for his senior season. Has the ability to play both guard spots, but needs to improve his outside shooting. Tony Harris Tennessee Has the ability to score as well as create for his own teammates. Has excellent quickness. Needs to work on his shot selection and perimeter shot. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: 115.c207.ethome.net.tw
