He spoke on and on without expecting the least response from his interlocutor, me. His tongue twisted with wild abandon, apparently knowing no bounds; I, a reluctant listener, cannot help wondering all the time when his saliva will run dry and thus spare the bombardment on my ever-open ears. His topic, if ever consistent, leapt from philosophy, economy, politics, literature to... everything that came into his mind at random. I utterly got lost, unable to follow a bit logic of his thinking, despite my brain-racking efforts. Giving up the forlorn hope of figuring out him, I decided to pay him "nodding service." Without caring what on earth he was mumbling about, I just kept nodding, as though fully agreeing whatever splashing out from his volcano-like mouth. However, he, vindicating my hypothesis, carried on his monologue literaaly without noticing my blank face, or even my presence which can not be more insignificant to him. All of a sudden, an unusual quietness drew on. This quietness, whatever it means, is in every way a much-desired, long-expected moment. Strangely enough, his face wore all smiles, as if having reached the climax of his monologue and successfully putting finishing touches to it. For fear of his resuming yet another interminable monologue, I bade my farewell in haste; he detained my hasty, fleeing paces by saying, "What a wonderful night to have such a pleasant talk with you!" -- Anything worth doing is worth doing well. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.119.27.31
