In the First World War, a British divisional intelligence officer on the
Western Front built a home from home. The following excerpt is from Paul
Maze's A Frenchman in Khaki .
“ I was told that he lived somewhere near me on the Ypres salient but I had
never been able to find him. One evening I struck a patch of vegetables and
flowers in the midst of a desolate shelled area. I found him sitting up in
bed, a shelf full of books beside him. He had built up for himself a life
completely detached from the war and to this he returned every evening after
his work. His pride was his vegetable garden. He was perhaps the only man in
the salient who supplemented his ration with home-grown vegetables. ”

書 。 他 營 造 了 自 己 的 天 地 ， 與 戰 爭 隔 絕 ， 每 天 下 班 後 就 徜 徉
其 中 。 他 以 自 己 的 菜 圃 為 榮 。 陣 地 突 出 部 一 帶 ， 也 許 只 有 他
一 人 自 己 種 菜 補 充 軍 糧 。 」
【 附 注 】 Struck a patch of vegetables 的 struck （ 現 在 式 是 strike ） 有
「 發 現 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： We dug everywhere, but never struck gold （
我 們 四 處 掘 ， 卻 始 終 找 不 到 黃 金 ） 。
