At the battle of Copenhagen between Britain and Denmark in 1801, each of the
British ships carried a detachment of soldiers. During the naval battle there
was nothing for these men to do and they were generally kept below decks for
safety. On board the Bellona, however, the army commander showed a total lack
of concern for his men. He was told that his men could be of no use, that
they were not near enough for musketry and were not wanted at the guns. They
had therefore better go below. This, he said, was impossible. It would be a
disgrace that could never be wiped away. They were, therefore, drawn up upon
the gangway to satisfy this cruel point of honour and there without the
possibility of annoying the enemy they were mown down.

絲 毫 威 脅 。
【 附 注 】 拿 破 侖 戰 爭 期 間 ， 丹 麥 為 保 持 海 道 暢 通 ， 和 英 國 開
戰 ， 敗 績 。 Mow 是 「 割 草 」 ， mow down 常 用 來 說 殺 死 大 批 人 ， 例
如 ： The tanks mowed/mown down the peaceful demonstrators （ 坦 克 車 如 剪
草 般 殲 滅 大 批 和 平 示 威 者 ） 。
