At the battle of Copenhagen in 1801, Horatio Nelson in the Elephant was
acting under Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, a rather cautious commander in chief.
When the signal number 39 （ for leave off action ） was shown on board Sir
Hyde's flagship, Nelson observed to Captain Foley, “ You know, Foley, I have
only one eye. I have a right to be blind sometimes. ” And then putting the
glass to his blind eye he exclaimed, “ I really do not see the signal. ”
He led the attack on the Danish fleet. Eventually the British, with Nelson
commanding the smaller vessels that bore the brunt of the engagement,
destroyed the greater part of the fleet.

艦 ， 而 納 爾 遜 指 揮 的 較 小 型 戰 艦 更 是 戰 鬥 的 主 力 。

」 ， 例 如 ： As editor-in-chief, he bore the brunt of the blame （ 他 是 總
編 輯 ， 須 負 起 過 失 的 主 要 責 任 ） 。
