A naval engagement between the French and the British in 1812 saw a tragic
incident. There was aboard the British warship Swallow a seaman named Phelan,
whose wife was on board to assist the surgeon. When she heard her husband was
wounded, she rushed upon deck and received him in her arms; he faintly raised
his head to kiss her; she burst into a flood of tears, and told him to take
courage, as “ all would yet be well ” ─ ─ and then a shot took her head
off. Her husband, wrapped in her arms, opened his eyes once more and then
closed them forever. The woman had only three weeks before given birth to a
boy.
When action was over, the sailors all agreed that the boy should have a
hundred fathers. But what could be the substitute for a mother? Happily there
was a Maltese goat on board, which gave an abundance of milk.

─ 跟 著 她 的 頭 就 被 砲 彈 轟 掉 。 她 丈 夫 在 她 懷 中 再 一 次 睜 開 眼
睛 ， 然 後 就 一 瞑 不 視 。 那 女 人 三 個 星 期 之 前 才 生 了 個 兒 子 。
戰 事 結 束 後 ， 船 上 水 兵 都 說 孩 子 會 有 一 百 個 父 親 ， 但 誰 能 代
替 他 母 親 ？ 幸 而 船 上 有 隻 馬 爾 他 羊 ， 乳 汁 十 分 豐 富 。
【 附 注 】 費 倫 夫 婦 最 後 帆 布 裹 屍 ， 同 葬 大 海 。 他 們 的 兒 子 則
健 康 成 長 。
