In December 1941 the Japanese invaded Malaya and drove through the peninsula
to the British base at Singapore. Their artillery shelled many targets, and
every now and then Japanese planes unloosed their loads of horror. The
screams of the wounded and dying were something to instil fear into the
stoutest heart.
On a little side road, nearly in the centre of the carnage, was a Tommy
private, with a Vickers, mounted for ack-ack, pouring fire from a red hot
barrel at every plane that passed. Right in the centre of the road he stayed,
no camouflage and no fear, and his answer to all and sundry was, "The bloody
— s will never think of looking for me in the open, and I want to see a
bloody plane brought down."

在 路 中 心 ， 沒 有 偽 裝 ， 沒 有 畏 懼 。 無 論 誰 人 相 問 ， 他 的 答 案
都 是 ： 「 那 些 他 娘 的 ｘ ｘ 鬼 決 不 會 想 到 我 身 在 毫 無 遮 掩 的 地
方 ； 我 要 把 他 娘 的 一 架 飛 機 打 下 來 。 」
【 附 注 】 Vickers 是 機 槍 製 造 商 的 名 稱 ， 所 以 Vickers 也 指 機 槍 。
Ack-ack 則 是 anti-aircraft （ 防 空 ） 的 縮 略 。 Sundry 是 「 各 種 的 」
， 例 如 Sundry questions 是 「 各 種 問 題 」 。 成 語 all and sundry 指 「
所 有 人 」 ， 例 如 ： He invited all and sundry to the party （ 他 邀 請 所
有 人 出 席 派 對 ） 。
