During the Dutch revolt against Spain in 1590 the Dutch leader, Count
Maurice, captured the strategically important city of Breda with a variation
on the idea of the Trojan Horse.
Learining that boats carrying peat were admitted to the castle at Breda
without being searched, Maurice sought one of his father's own servants who
operated a peat boat and persuaded him to carry only three loads of peat
instead of the nine he usually delivered to the garrison. Secreted under the
layers of peat were some eighty picked soldiers under the command of a
Captain Heraugieres. On 21 February the boat entered the castle without
arousing suspicion. After midnight the surface layers of peat were pulled
aside and out crept the Dutch soldiers. They seized the castle at a rush and
signalled to Maurice's main forces, which advanced to capture the city.
