During the 18th century the punishment of flogging was very common in the
British Army. It could be imposed for the most absurd of reasons.
On one occasion, a company major was giving a reading at church parade. His
broad Yorkshire accent amused some of the men and when he read the words “
suffered under Pontius Pilate, one of the men, a known wag, muttered, “
What's Ponchews Peelatt? ” The officer heard the comment, and turned to
look at the culprit. “ Up to your old tricks again, are you Jock? ” The
major summoned Jock to a drumhead court-martial at which he was sentenced to
one hundred lashes. Once the flogging was completed, the major returned to
his text, “ Now where was I? Oh, that's right...suffered under Pontius
Pilat. ”
十 八 世 紀 期 間 ， 英 軍 常 行 笞 刑 ， 用 刑 原 因 有 時 非 常 荒 謬 。
有 一 次 ， 軍 隊 上 堂 禮 拜 ， 某 連 的 少 校 讀 經 ， 濃 濃 的 約 克 郡 口
音 令 一 些 士 兵 感 到 好 笑 。 他 讀 到 「 在 龐 修 斯 ． 比 拉 多 手 下 受
折 磨 」 等 字 ， 一 個 愛 講 笑 見 稱 的 士 兵 咕 咕 噥 噥 說 ： 「 什 麼 是
龐 丘 斯 皮 拉 ？ 」 那 少 校 聽 到 了 ， 轉 頭 望 著 這 罪 人 ： 「 喬 克 ，
又 玩 你 的 老 把 戲 啦 ？ 」 他 當 場 召 開 軍 事 法 庭 ， 喬 克 被 判 鞭 笞
一 百 下 。 打 完 之 後 ， 那 少 校 繼 續 讀 經 ； 「 我 讀 到 哪 裡 ？ 啊 ，
對 了 … … 在 龐 修 斯 ． 比 拉 多 手 下 受 折 磨 。 」
【 附 注 】 比 拉 多 是 猶 太 總 督 ， 負 責 審 判 耶 穌 。 Church parade 是
軍 隊 依 規 定 上 教 堂 禮 拜 的 時 間 ， drumhead court-martial 則 是 即 時
的 軍 法 審 判 ， 例 如 ： He was convicted at a drumhead court-martial （ 他
在 當 場 召 開 的 軍 事 法 庭 上 被 判 有 罪 ） 。
