有 報 刊 評 論 英 國 奪 得 二 ○ 一 二 年 奧 運 主 辦 權 ， 說 Paris was
considered by many to be a shoo-in ， 又 說 London's successful pitch for the
Games leaves the French floundering in Olympic realpolitik 。 Realpolitik 和
shoo-in 是 什 麼 意 思 ？
Realpolitik 本 是 德 文 ， real 即 practical ， politik 即 politics ， 指 不
講 道 義 的 現 實 政 治 ； shoo-in 則 是 美 國 俚 語 ， 指 公 認 必 勝 的 競
爭 者 或 候 選 人 ， 例 如 ： (1)In a classic piece of realpolitik, the
French government is more than happy to overlook mainland China's poor human
rights record as long as Peking offers the French lucrative trade
opportunites （ 只 要 北 京 給 予 法 國 利 潤 豐 厚 的 貿 易 機 會 ， 法 國 政
府 就 絕 對 樂 意 無 視 中 國 大 陸 的 惡 劣 人 權 紀 錄 ， 那 是 典 型 的 現
實 政 治 ） 。 (2)He was a shoo-in to win the presidential election after
the exposure of his opponent's corrupt practices （ 他 對 手 的 貪 污 行 徑 揭
發 之 後 ， 一 般 人 都 認 為 他 可 獲 選 ） 。
讀 者 示 下 的 兩 句 是 說 ： 「 本 來 大 家 都 認 為 巴 黎 會 獲 選 。 」 「
倫 敦 爭 取 主 辦 奧 運 成 功 ， 是 奧 林 匹 克 現 實 政 治 的 結 果 ， 法 國
只 能 徒 呼 奈 何 。 」 Flounder 是 「 （ 在 泥 濘 等 之 中 ） 掙 扎 」 ， 例
如 ： The horse was floundering in the mire （ 那 匹 馬 在 泥 沼 中 掙 扎 ）
。 Floundering in Olympic realpolitik 直 譯 就 是 「 在 奧 林 匹 克 現 實 政
治 中 掙 扎 」 。 Pitch 指 「 叫 賣 」 或 「 爭 取 」 ， 常 見 於 make a
pitch for 這 成 語 ， 例 如 ： When I learned about the vacancy, I decided to
make a pitch for it （ 我 知 道 那 個 職 位 空 缺 ， 決 定 申 請 ） 。
