In 1876, the 7th US Cavalry under General Custer moved to herd Sioux Indians
in Motana into government reservations. Underestimating the size of an Indian
village, Custer refused to await reinforcements and attacked, recklessly
dividing his force into three columns. He was killed and his own column was
entirely wiped out.
Some of the 7th Cavalry, retreating with Captain Edgerly, showed great
heroism. In the heat of the battle Edgerly noticed that Private Saunders had
a broad grin on his face although he was sitting in a perfect shower of
bullets. After the firing ceased the next day, he asked Saunders what he was
laughing at at such a time. Saunders replied, “ I was laughing to see what
poor shots those Indians were. They were shooting too low and their bullets
were spattering dust like drops of rain. ”

第 二 天 ， 槍 戰 停 止 了 ， 埃 傑 利 問 桑 德 斯 在 那 樣 的 時 候 還 笑 什
麼 。 桑 德 斯 回 答 ： 「 我 笑 那 些 印 第 安 人 不 懂 用 槍 ， 瞄 得 太 低
， 子 彈 像 雨 點 一 樣 揚 起 灰 塵 。 」
【 附 註 】 這 場 戰 役 叫 小 比 格 霍 恩 河 之 戰 （ Battle of the Little
Bighorn ） ， 在 美 國 史 上 十 分 著 名 。
