In 1857, Indian troops in British service rose against British rule. The
mutiny spread throughout north India, and the British garrison at Lucknow was
besieged. It was vital that the defenders maintained absolute vigilance
during the seige for fear of being overrun should they relax.
One British soldier, Metcalfe, found the Reverend Harris's little dog named
Bustle very useful. Bustle would accompany Metcalfe on his watch, and if he
should become drowsy the dog bit his trousers and shook them vigorously until
he awoke. Both Bustle and Metcalfe survived the siege. Metcalfe stayed in
India for two more years before returning to Aldershot, where he saw one day
a little dog running towards him. It was Bustle, who had recognised Metcalfe
immediately.

就 會 咬 住 他 的 褲 子 猛 搖 ， 把 他 搖 醒 。 巴 斯 爾 和 梅 特 卡 夫 終 於
都 安 然 度 過 這 場 圍 城 戰 。 梅 特 卡 夫 在 印 度 繼 續 逗 留 了 兩 年 ，
然 後 回 到 英 國 奧 爾 德 肖 特 。 有 一 天 ， 他 看 見 一 隻 小 狗 向 他 跑
來 ， 原 來 是 巴 斯 爾 ： 這 隻 小 狗 一 眼 就 認 出 了 梅 特 卡 夫 。
【 附 注 】 這 場 印 度 兵 變 英 文 叫 Indian Mutiny ， 直 接 起 因 是 英 國
印 度 部 隊 認 為 分 發 他 們 的 子 彈 是 塗 了 動 物 脂 肪 ， 觸 犯 印 度 大
忌 。 勒 克 瑙 被 困 五 個 月 之 後 才 解 圍 。
