As the First World War came to an end in 1918, millions of British servicemen
returned to the “ land fit for heroes ” promised by Prime Minister David
Lloyd George. One ex-serviceman's wife wrote: “ We'd had a war wedding
before he left, so we didn't have a house of our own. After a few months we
were given a railway carriage to live in. That was the Home for Heroes. ”
And an ex-serviceman wrote: “ I had a walk around and eventually sat on a
seat on the Embankment. I must have dozed off. I woke as dawn was breaking,
and what a sight it was. All the seats were full of old soldiers, and a lot
more were lying on the steps, some wrapped up in old newspapers. Men who had
fought in the trenches, now unwanted and left to starve, were all huddled
together. ”
一 九 一 八 年 第 一 次 世 界 大 戰 結 束 ， 數 以 百 萬 計 英 國 軍 人 回 到
大 衛 ． 勞 埃 ． 喬 治 首 相 承 諾 的 「 英 雄 之 鄉 」 。 據 一 位 退 役 軍
人 妻 子 記 載 ： 「 丈 夫 出 征 前 ， 和 我 行 戰 時 婚 禮 ， 所 以 我 們 沒
有 自 己 的 房 子 。 過 了 幾 個 月 ， 當 局 給 我 們 一 個 火 車 車 廂 居 住
， 那 就 是 英 雄 之 家 。 」
又 據 一 位 退 役 軍 人 記 載 ： 「 我 四 處 閑 逛 ， 最 後 在 泰 晤 士 河 堤
一 個 座 位 上 坐 下 來 ， 迷 迷 糊 糊 睡 著 了 ， 醒 時 天 方 破 曉 ， 抬 頭
一 看 ， 怵 目 驚 心 。 河 堤 上 的 座 位 坐 滿 了 老 兵 ， 還 有 很 多 老 兵
偃 臥 石 階 ， 有 些 身 上 蓋 著 舊 報 紙 。 這 些 漢 子 曾 在 戰 壕 裡 拚 命
， 而 今 擠 在 一 起 ， 無 人 過 問 ， 捱 飢 受 凍 。 」
