About the year 1344, King Philip of France sent his eldest son the Duke of
Normandy to recover from the British the city of Angouleme, defeneded by Lord
Norwich. After a brave resistance, Lord Norwich found the city no longer
tenable against the overwhelming force of the French, so he presented himself
on the walls of the city and demanded a conference with the duke, who asked
if he had made up his mind to capitulate. “ Not at all, ” replied Lord
Norwich; “ but as tomorrow is the Feast of the Virgin, to whom I know you as
well as myself bear a great devotion, I desire a cessation of arms for that
day. ” The duke agreed.
The next day, the Angouleme garrison with Lord Norwich at their head marched
out of the city with all their baggage. The surprised French were about to
attack when the duke stopped them. “ I see I have been outwitted, but let us
be content with gaining the city. ”

的 昂 古 萊 姆 城 。 守 城 的 諾 利 其 爵 士 奮 勇 抵 抗 ， 但 見 法 軍 勢 大
， 難 再 固 守 ， 就 走 上 城 牆 ， 說 要 和 諾 曼 第 公 爵 商 議 。 公 爵 問
他 是 不 是 決 定 投 降 ， 他 回 答 ： 「 當 然 不 是 。 不 過 ， 明 天 是 聖
母 節 ， 而 我 知 道 閣 下 和 我 一 樣 敬 重 聖 母 。 我 希 望 明 天 休 戰 。
」 公 爵 答 應 了 。
第 二 天 ， 諾 利 其 爵 士 率 領 城 中 守 軍 ， 攜 所 有 輜 重 出 城 。 法 軍
愕 然 ， 準 備 攻 擊 ， 只 是 諾 曼 第 公 爵 不 許 。 「 我 是 被 愚 弄 了 ，
但 取 得 昂 古 萊 姆 城 就 算 了 吧 。 」
【 附 注 】 諾 利 其 爵 士 就 這 樣 不 折 一 兵 一 將 ， 逃 出 重 圍 。
