小 島 」 ， 或 譯 做 「 醉 漢 飛 機 上 發 爛 」 。 「 鬧 事 」 或 「 發 爛 」
英 文 怎 麼 說 ？
「 發 爛 」 應 是 「 發 難 」 之 誤 。 但 「 發 難 」 一 般 指 舉 兵 起 義 或
發 起 反 抗 ， 和 「 鬧 事 」 不 同 。 報 紙 誤 用 了 詞 語 。
「 鬧 事 」 譯 做 to cause / make trouble 、 to become unruly 、 to kick up /
raise / make a row 等 都 可 以 。 Unruly （ 不 守 規 則 ） 當 然 是 un （ 不
） 和 rule （ 規 則 ） 合 成 的 形 容 詞 ； row 指 「 騷 動 」 或 「 爭 吵 」
， 讀 [rau] ， 和 讀 [rou] 的 row （ 一 排 ） 不 同 。 例 如 ： A drunken man
was dumped on a Portuguese island for unruly behaviour / causing trouble /
kicking up a row on a plane.
奧 斯 汀 （ Jane Austen ） 小 說 Northanger Abbey 有 以 下 一 句 ： She is a
most amiable girl; such a superior understanding! 那 understanding 是 什 麼 意
思 ？ 又 most 之 前 為 什 麼 不 用 the?
最 高 級 詞 語 （ the superlative ） 之 前 ， 習 慣 用 the 字 ， 例 如 ： （
1 ） She is the tallest of the three （ 三 人 之 中 ， 她 個 子 最 高 ） 。
（ 2 ） He is the most hardworking man in the office （ 他 是 辦 公 室 裡 最
勤 奮 的 人 ） 。
但 是 ， most 有 時 只 解 作 「 十 分 」 或 「 很 」 ， 不 是 「 最 」 ， 那
就 應 冠 以 a 字 。 請 比 較 以 下 兩 句 ： （ 1 ） He is a most funny man （
他 這 個 人 很 有 趣 ） 。 （ 2 ） He is the funniest man I have ever seen （
我 沒 見 過 像 他 這 樣 有 趣 的 人 ） 。
奧 斯 汀 那 一 句 是 說 ： 「 這 女 孩 十 分 溫 柔 ， 也 很 有 智 慧 。 」
Understanding 指 對 事 物 的 理 解 ， 也 就 是 智 慧 。
