我 沒 聽 過 cut the nose 等 等 ， 只 聽 過 cut off one's nose to spite one's
face 。 Spite 作 動 詞 ， 指 「 跟 … … 作 對 」 ， 例 如 ： He turned up
the radio to spite me （ 他 和 我 作 對 ， 把 收 音 機 聲 音 開 大 ） 。 「 割
去 鼻 子 跟 面 孔 作 對 」 ， 就 是 「 為 了 賭 氣 而 做 不 利 自 己 的 事 」
， 例 如 ： He was so angry with his employer that he resigned. But it was a
case of cutting his nose to spite his face, because at his age he could not
possibly get another job （ 他 不 滿 僱 主 ， 憤 而 辭 職 ， 其 實 對 自 己 不

丹 ． 庫 克 （ Dan Cook ） 的 報 紙 體 育 版 編 輯 模 仿 The rodeo isn't over
till the bull riders ride （ 牛 仔 競 技 會 要 到 騎 牛 者 表 演 才 告 結 束
） 一 語 ， 寫 成 對 句 ： the opera isn't over till the fat lady sings （ 歌
劇 要 到 胖 女 郎 演 唱 才 告 結 束 ） 。 現 在 ， 這 成 語 常 用 來 勉 勵 競
賽 中 居 劣 勢 者 ， 例 如 ： With his nose bleeding, the boxer braced
himself for another round. "It isn't over till the fat lady sings," he said （
