During the siege of Vicksburg in 1863 in the American Civil War, a Catholic
nun, Sister Serephena, escorted by a small black boy, was speaking to a
Confederate corporal when a shell suddenly landed at their feet, with its
fuse still burning. The three of them were transfixed with horror and the
corporal leapt backward and took to his heels ignominiously. The little black
boy picked up the smouldering shell and threw it as far as he could away from
them. He was only just in time as the shell exploded in mid-air.
“ Why didn't you do that immediately? ” asked the trembling nun. “ Your
hesitation might have cost us our lives. ”
“ Lord! Miss Sister Serephena, ” said the little boy. “ I got too much
respect for white folks to do a thing like that while there was a white
gentleman standing there. ”

， 慢 一 點 就 來 不 及 了 。
瑟 雷 赫 納 修 女 渾 身 發 抖 ， 問 那 小 男 孩 ： 「 你 為 什 麼 不 馬 上 動
手 ？ 遲 遲 疑 疑 ， 可 能 送 了 我 們 性 命 。 」
小 男 孩 說 ： 「 唉 ， 瑟 雷 赫 納 修 女 小 姐 ， 我 非 常 尊 敬 白 人 ， 剛
才 既 然 有 一 位 白 種 紳 士 站 在 那 裡 ， 我 不 敢 僭 越 。 」
