During the War of the Spanish Succession, the Austrian general Eugene of
Savoy once received a letter, and on opening it found that it contained just
a single piece of greasy paper, which he threw on the ground without a
thought. His adjutant, a man of suspicious nature, picked up the paper and
smelled it, whereupon he first became giddy and then fell unconscious to the
ground. Only the swift administration of an antidote saved him.
When the poisoned paper was hung around the neck of a dog it was effective in
killing the animal after a few hours' suffering. Eugene was the least
disturbed of all the onlookers, commenting “ You need not wonder at it. I
have several times before now received letters of this nature. ”

驚 訝 。 我 之 前 也 收 過 幾 封 這 樣 的 信 件 。 」

牙 。
Whereupon 是 連 接 詞 ， 有 「 馬 上 」 、 「 隨 即 」 的 意 思 。 假 如 不 和
上 文 連 成 一 句 ， 應 改 為 thereupon ， 例 如 ： He smelled it. Thereupon
he became giddy 。
