During the Napoleonic Wars, chivalry was not entirely dead. On learning that
Josephine, Empress of France, was developing a garden of exotic blooms at her
palace of Malmaison, their lordships of the Admiralty ordered British sea
captains to ensure that any plants and seeds addressed to her Imperial
Highness found aboard captured vessels were to be forwarded to her with all
despatch.
Napoleon Bonaparte, who married Josephine in 1796 and divorced her in 1809,
is said to have told the amorous Empress one night when he was resting before
battle: “ Not tonight, Josephine. ” There is also a saying attributed to
Josephine: “ Bonaparte is good for nothing. ”

瑟 芬 說 ： 「 約 瑟 芬 ， 今 晚 不 行 。 」 還 有 一 句 話 據 說 是 約 瑟 芬
說 的 ： 「 波 拿 巴 什 麼 都 不 行 。 」
【 附 注 】 Not tonight, Josephine 一 語 很 有 名 ， 現 在 仍 然 用 作 拒 絕
人 家 的 戲 語 ， 但 應 該 不 是 出 自 拿 破 崙 之 口 ， 只 是 英 國 維 多 利
亞 時 代 舞 台 上 的 創 作 。
Amorous 是 「 求 愛 的 」 ， 特 別 是 性 愛 ， 例 如 ： Mary hated his
amorous advances （ 瑪 麗 惱 恨 他 多 番 性 挑 逗 ） 。
