In 1697 a band of Indian warriors attacked a white settlement at Haverhill in
Massachusetts, and carried off many captives, including a Mrs Hannah Dustin
and her maid Mary Neff. The captives were divided up between the warriors.
Hannah and Mary were given to a pair of warriors and their squaws. They were
made to carry heavy loads, and were told that when they reached the Indian
village they would be stripped and made to run the gauntlet till they died.
After six weeks of travelling, Hannah caught the 12 Indians off guard. While
they were sleeping, she took their tomahawks, and together with Mary
proceeded to kill them all except an old woman and a child. She scalped them
and returned to Haverhill, and was awarded ￡ 50 for the ten Indian scalps.

過 一 名 老 婦 、 一 個 孩 子 。 漢 娜 還 剝 下 死 者 頭 皮 ， 回 到 黑 弗 黑
爾 ， 憑 十 個 印 第 安 人 頭 皮 ， 贏 得 五 十 英 鎊 獎 賞 。
