In 1741, the Maratha general Raghuji laid siege to the French-held town of
Pondicherry. The French governor Dumas sent a present of ten bottles of
liqueurs to Raghuji, who gave them to his wife.
The lady was so impressed by the liqueurs that she insisted that her husband
acquire more, whatever the cost. Raghuji was thus placed on the horns of a
dilemma: he was most unwilling to reduce his demands on Pondicherry, yet more
liqueurs would have to be gained otherwise his wife might prove impossible to
live with. He had to agree to begin negotiations with the French. Finally, he
withdrew his troops and left the French in peace, laden with a good supply of
liqueurs.
一 七 四 一 年 ， 馬 拉 地 將 領 拉 古 吉 圍 攻 法 國 佔 領 的 本 地 治 里 市
。 法 國 總 督 杜 馬 以 甜 酒 十 瓶 相 贈 ， 拉 古 吉 都 交 了 給 妻 子 。
他 妻 子 非 常 欣 賞 那 些 甜 酒 ， 叫 丈 夫 無 論 如 何 都 要 多 求 一 些 。
拉 古 吉 陷 入 了 兩 難 之 局 ： 他 不 想 減 少 城 下 之 盟 的 條 件 ， 但 酒
又 不 可 不 多 求 ， 否 則 和 妻 子 一 起 的 日 子 會 很 難 捱 。 他 不 得 不
和 法 國 人 談 判 ， 最 後 載 著 大 量 甜 酒 ， 撤 軍 而 去 ， 當 地 法 國 人
重 見 太 平 。
〔 附 注 〕 這 個 故 事 發 生 在 印 度 。 馬 拉 地 王 國 創 於 一 六 七 四 年
， 勢 力 遍 及 印 度 南 部 和 中 部 ， 後 來 被 英 國 征 服 。
