In 1800, the 54th foot regiment of the British army was sent to Egypt. On
reaching Malta, the soldiers' wives had to return to England. Unfortunately
the two ships carrying them were captured by the French.
With typical Gallic gallantry, the French returned the women to the British
base at Minorca, where an Irish regiment was garrisoned. Soon news reached
Minorca that the Egyptian expedition had suffered a disaster and most of the
men of the 54th were lost. The widows, seeking consolation, now married men
of the Irish garrison.
But fate had not finished with them yet. The Irish soldiers were later sent
to Egypt themselves, where they learned that the 54th regiment's expedition
had not foundered, nor had the regiment ceased to exist. The erstwhile
"widows" found themselves with two husbands. In the end just one of the
previous husbands took back his wife.

但 命 運 之 神 還 要 播 弄 她 們 。 那 些 愛 爾 蘭 士 兵 後 來 也 奉 命 赴 埃
及 ， 到 達 後 ， 獲 悉 五 十 四 兵 團 沒 有 遇 難 ， 也 沒 有 滅 亡 。 那 些
一 度 「 喪 夫 」 的 婦 女 ， 發 覺 自 己 有 兩 個 丈 夫 。 最 後 ， 只 有 一
個 前 夫 和 妻 子 重 圓 破 鏡 。
