French soldiers who went to help the Americans during the American Revolution
often found that their hosts had strange ideas about them. One day, the
Chevalier de Pontgibaud entered the house of a farmer upon whom he was
billeted. The farmer said, "I'm very glad to have a Frenchman in the house.
You see the barber lives a long way off so you'll be able to shave me." "But
I can't even shave myself," de Pontgibaud replied. "That's very odd," said
the farmer. "I was told that all Frenchmen were barbers."
Soon afterwards the farmer served him some beef, and said, "You're lucky to
be able to come over to America and get good beef to eat." When the Frenchman
assured him that they had beef in France and excellent beef too, the American
responded, "That's impossible, or you wouldn't be so thin."

牛 肉 ， 而 且 是 極 好 的 牛 肉 。 那 農 夫 說 ： 「 那 是 不 可 能 的 ， 看
你 瘦 成 這 個 樣 子 。 」
