In 1900, the British-held town of Ladysmith in Africa was subjected to a
four-month siege by Boer forces. In spite of the continual bombardment, the
Ladysmith garrison pursued typical British pastimes like cricket. A cricket
pitch was set up in sight of the Boer guns on Bulwana Ridge. On one occasion
Colonel Rawlinson witnessed a bizarre incident: "I spent a few idle moments
watching the Imperial Light Horse play cricket. They kept a man to watch the
Boer guns, and when he saw the flash he shouted, 'Here she comes.' The
batsman pretended to play the shell when, to his astonishment, it landed on
the pitch about three feet from him. The concussion knocked him down but he
was not a bit hurt."

輕 騎 兵 玩 板 球 。 他 們 派 了 個 人 看 波 爾 軍 的 大 砲 ， 見 到 火 光
一 閃 ， 就 喊 ： 『 來 了 ！ 』 那 擊 球 員 裝 成 要 把 砲 彈 擊 回 去 的 樣
子 ， 不 料 砲 彈 落 在 球 場 上 ， 離 他 只 有 三 英 尺 左 右 ， 把 他 震 倒
地 上 ， 但 他 絲 毫 無 損 。 」
【 附 注 】 所 謂 Boer （ 波 爾 人 ） ， 指 南 非 荷 蘭 移 民 的 後 裔 。 他
們 兩 度 和 英 國 衝 突 ， 史 稱 Boer Wars （ 波 爾 戰 爭 ） 。 第 二 次 波 爾
戰 爭 一 八 九 九 年 爆 發 ， 一 九 ○ 二 年 結 束 ， 英 軍 奏 凱 。
Continual 是 「 斷 斷 續 續 的 」 ， 和 continuous （ 不 斷 的 ） 不 同 。 例
如 continual rain 是 時 下 時 歇 的 雨 ， continuous rain 則 連 綿 不 住 。
