讀 Animal Farm （ 動 物 農 莊 ） ， 見 到 以 下 一 句 ： We are given just so
much food as will keep the breath in our bodies （ 我 們 獲 得 的 食 物 ， 只
足 夠 維 持 生 命 ） 。 這 個 as 是 連 接 詞 還 是 什 麼 ？ 字 典 上 似 乎 不
見 這 用 法 。
這 個 as 不 易 解 釋 ， 勉 強 可 以 說 是 個 關 係 代 名 詞 （ relative
pronoun ） ， 有 點 像 that 、 who 等 字 ， 可 代 替 主 詞 （ subject ） 或 受
詞 （ object ） ， 常 用 在 such 、 the same 、 as many / much 、 not so /
as many / much 等 之 後 。 要 掌 握 用 法 ， 不 妨 熟 讀 以 下 例 句 ： （ 1
） Such people as （ = The people who ） saw the paintings liked them （ 那 些
油 畫 看 過 的 人 都 喜 歡 ） 。 （ 2 ） Such paintings as I saw （ = The
paintings that I saw ） were quite admirable （ 我 見 到 的 油 畫 都 很 出 色
） 。 （ 3 ） The same fighting spirit as （ = that ） had kept his father
going would also keep him going （ 他 父 親 曾 憑 一 股 戰 鬥 精 神 奮 力 前
進 ， 他 同 樣 會 憑 之 前 進 ） 。 （ 4 ） I found in him the same fighting
spirit as （ = that ） I had found in his father （ 在 他 身 上 ， 我 看 到 從
前 他 父 親 那 種 戰 鬥 精 神 ） 。 （ 5 ） Is there enough vaccine for as
many elders as （ =all the elders who ） need it? （ 有 沒 有 足 夠 疫 苗 供
給 所 有 須 注 射 的 老 人 ？ ） （ 6 ） We don 掐 have so / as much vaccine
as （ = the amount of vaccine that ） is needed （ 我 們 沒 有 那 麼 多 疫 苗
應 付 需 求 ） 。 以 上 一 、 三 、 五 句 都 以 as 作 主 詞 ， 二 、 四 、 六
句 則 以 as 作 受 詞 。
有 時 ， as 並 不 代 表 某 個 名 詞 ， 而 是 泛 指 前 文 所 述 ， 例 如 ： He
did not stand up, as was directed （ 他 沒 有 按 指 示 站 起 來 ） 。
