In the French Wars of Religion, Henry Ⅳ employed many foreign mercenaries.
The day before the battle of Ivry, Colonel Schomberg, anxious to secure his
German troops' obedience, came to the king to urge the payment of his men's
arrears. But Henry, irritated in the midst of his anxieties, dismissed him
saying, "Is this a time to come for pay?"
Next day Henry saw Schomberg at the head of his troops, looking depressed. He
rode up to Schomberg and said aloud, "Monsieur Schomberg, I am convinced of
your valour. I have offended you and entreat you to pardon me." "It is true,"
answered Schomberg, "that your Majesty wounded me yesterday, but today you
kill me. For your conduct at this instant will force me to sacrifice my life
in your service. "And that day he was slain, fighting by Henry's side.
法 國 宗 教 戰 爭 期 間 ， 亨 利 四 世 聘 用 大 量 外 國 僱 傭 兵 。 伊 夫 里
之 役 前 一 天 ， 雄 貝 格 上 校 為 教 手 下 德 意 志 軍 隊 服 從 ， 來 見 亨
利 ， 要 求 支 付 拖 欠 的 軍 餉 。 但 亨 利 當 時 憂 心 忡 忡 ， 憤 然 把 他
斥 退 ： 「 這 是 來 要 錢 的 時 候 嗎 ？ 」
第 二 天 ， 亨 利 看 見 雄 貝 格 帶 著 軍 隊 ， 悶 悶 不 樂 。 他 策 馬 走 到
雄 貝 格 跟 前 ， 大 聲 說 ： 「 雄 貝 格 先 生 ， 我 知 道 你 勇 武 兼 人 ，
過 去 有 所 冒 犯 ， 敬 請 原 諒 。 」 雄 貝 格 回 答 說 ； 「 陛 下 昨 天 的
確 折 辱 了 我 ， 但 今 天 卻 判 了 我 死 刑 ， 剛 才 的 言 行 ， 使 我 不 得
不 為 陛 下 效 命 。 」 他 當 天 就 在 亨 利 身 邊 力 戰 陣 亡 。
【 附 注 】 宗 著 戰 爭 是 法 國 一 五 六 二 年 至 九 八 年 一 場 內 戰 ， 亨
利 四 世 獲 得 最 後 勝 利 。
