The American wars against the Indians in the late 18th century were extremely
savage. At the battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 American captain Asa
Hartshorn was separated from his men and surrounded by Indians. He defended
himself with his halberd against the enemy until they despaired of being able
to tomahawk him while alive. One of them fired an arrow into his chest, which
killed him instantly. The Indians were filled with admiration for the brave
officer who had fallen, and put two hearts made out of leather into an
incision they made in his breast, as testimony that he had courage enough for
two men.

【 附 注 】 He had courage enough for two men 這 一 句 ， courage enough 可 改
作 enough courage 。 Enough 一 般 用 在 名 詞 之 前 ， 置 於 名 詞 之 後 是
比 較 文 雅 的 寫 法 ， 例 如 ： Do you have enough money / money enough ？ （
你 的 錢 足 夠 嗎 ？ ）
此 外 ， fool enough （ 蠢 得 ） 、 man enough （ 有 男 子 氣 概 得 ） 、
gentleman enough （ 有 紳 士 風 度 得 ） 等 說 法 ， 習 慣 不 用 冠 詞 a 或
the ， 例 如 ： He was man enough to stand up to the dictator （ 他 是 個 男
子 漢 ， 不 怕 對 抗 獨 夫 ） 。 留 意 man enough 等 不 可 改 為 enough man 。
