有 一 本 《 妙 語 如 珠 》 說 ， cut up 等 於 廣 東 話 「 打 牙 鉸 」 （ 閑 聊
） ， 例 句 是 She was cutting up with the queer old man （ 她 正 和 那 古 怪
老 頭 閑 聊 ） 。 「 閑 聊 」 真 可 叫 cut up 嗎 ？
Cut up 的 這 個 解 釋 ， 我 沒 有 聽 過 ； 遍 查 字 典 ， 也 都 查 不 到 ， 《
妙 語 》 所 言 恐 怕 沒 有 根 據 。
說 「 閑 聊 」 ， 英 文 可 用 chat 、 gossip 二 字 ， 俗 語 還 有 chew the
fat / rag （ 嚼 脂 肪 / 碎 布 ） 的 說 法 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） She was
chatting with the queer old man 。 （ 2 ） He enjoys chewing the fat with his
neighbours in the evening （ 他 喜 歡 晚 上 和 鄰 居 閑 聊 ） 。
Cut up 即 切 碎 ， 可 引 伸 解 作 「 嚴 厲 批 評 」 而 不 是 「 閑 聊 」 ， 例
如 ： Though badly cut up by the reviewers, his novel became a best-seller （
他 那 本 小 說 雖 然 備 受 苛 評 ， 卻 很 暢 銷 ） 。
The World Health Organisation declared that as far as an influenza pandemic
is concerned, the question is not if but when, not whether millions would die
but how many millions 這 一 句 ， the question is not if but when 是 什 麼 句
法 ？ 可 舉 例 解 釋 嗎 ？
謹 先 把 句 子 翻 譯 如 下 ： 「 世 界 衛 生 組 織 宣 布 ， 流 行 性 感 冒 將
成 大 疫 ， 問 題 不 是 『 假 如 』 爆 發 而 是 『 何 時 』 爆 發 ； 不 是 死
者 會 否 以 百 萬 計 ， 而 是 會 以 多 少 百 萬 計 。 」
The question is not if but when 以 if 和 when 對 照 ， if 表 示 事 情 不 一 定
發 生 ， when 則 表 示 一 定 發 生 。 這 句 法 可 以 活 用 ， 例 如 ： （ 1
） The question is when and where （ 問 題 在 於 何 時 何 地 ） 。 （ 2 ）
The question is not who should do it but how to do it （ 問 題 不 是 由 誰 人
做 ， 而 是 怎 樣 做 ） 。
