A college professor worked for many years on an invention for making the
human voice travel miles along a wire, and at last perfected it. He tramped
across New England, trying to interest capitalists and political figures in
this device. He was Alexander Graham Bell, and he called his invention the
telephone.
Bell knew his invention could work. He was sorely in need of money to put his
invention on the market. But people laughed at him. It was, they said, simply
idiotic to suppose the human voice could be carried along a wire and be heard
for many miles, or even for a single mile.

貝 爾 知 道 他 的 發 明 可 以 應 用 ， 亟 需 資 金 把 電 話 投 入 市 場 。 但
不 少 人 譏 笑 他 ， 說 他 以 為 人 聲 可 經 由 電 線 傳 送 ， 並 且 可 以 在
很 多 英 里 之 外 聽 到 ， 真 是 愚 不 可 及 。 即 使 傳 送 一 英 里 都 不 可
能 啊 。
【 附 注 】 新 英 格 蘭 指 美 國 東 北 緬 因 、 新 罕 布 夏 、 佛 蒙 特 、 麻
薩 諸 塞 、 羅 德 島 、 康 乃 狄 克 六 州 ， 也 是 最 早 期 的 英 國 美 洲 殖
民 地 。
Telephone 由 tele （ 遙 遠 ） 和 phone （ 聲 音 ） 合 成 。 用 tele 合 成 的
英 文 字 不 少 ， 例 如 television （ 遙 遠 視 力 ） 即 電 視 ， telescope 即
望 遠 鏡 ， telepathy （ 遙 感 ） 即 心 靈 感 應 ， telegraph （ 遙 遠 圖 表
） 即 電 報 等 等 。
