There were always a number of women fighting in the ranks of Napoleon's Grand
Army. One, known as "chaste Suzanne of Calais", enlisted at 14 as a drummer,
without even having to disguise herself. When in 1798 her regiment was sent
to Egypt, she found that some of her colleagues began to press their
attentions more than they had while in France. Her solution to an
over-insistent colleague was to challenge him to a duel.
She served throughout the Napoleonic Wars, and was badly wounded at Waterloo.

拿 破 崙 戰 爭 期 間 ， 蘇 珊 娜 都 在 軍 中 。 滑 鐵 盧 之 役 她 也 有 參 加
， 身 受 重 傷 。
【 附 注 】 Attention 一 般 解 作 「 注 意 」 ， 是 不 可 數 名 詞 ； 但 是 ，
指 親 切 的 行 為 ， 特 別 是 向 女 人 獻 慇 懃 ， 則 往 往 用 複 數 形 式 ，
例 如 ： （ 1 ） We are grateful for our friends' small attentions （ 我 們
很 感 激 朋 友 表 達 的 小 小 心 意 ） 。 （ 2 ） She apparently did not like
her boss's attentions （ 她 顯 然 不 喜 歡 上 司 對 她 獻 慇 懃 ） 。
Over 加 在 形 容 詞 之 前 ， 一 般 有 「 過 份 」 含 義 ， 例 如
over-insistent 是 「 過 份 堅 持 」 ， oversensitive 是 「 過 份 敏 感 」 。
