香 港 與 英 國 育 事 業 合 作 之 每 年 一 度 慶 典 ） 一 語 ， 為 什 麼 UK 之
前 用 the ， HK 卻 不 用 ？ 國 家 或 城 鎮 等 冠 以 the 字 ， 有 規 則 可 循
嗎 ？
國 家 、 城 鎮 名 稱 ， 一 般 不 用 冠 詞 （ article ） a 、 an 、 the 。 不
過 ， 假 如 國 名 帶 republic （ 共 和 國 ） 、 kingdom （ 王 國 ） 、 union
（ 聯 邦 ） 等 普 通 名 詞 （ common noun ） ， 或 是 用 複 數 形 式 ， 則 要
加 the 字 ， 例 如 the Irish Republic （ 愛 爾 蘭 共 和 國 ） 、 the Republic
of China （ 中 華 民 國 ） 、 the Middle Kingdom （ 中 國 ） 、 the Byzantine
Empire （ 東 羅 馬 帝 國 ） 、 the Soviet Union （ 蘇 聯 ） 、 the
Philippines （ 菲 律 賓 ） 、 the United states （ 美 國 ） 、 the
Netherlands （ 荷 蘭 ） 等 。 但 假 如 叫 荷 蘭 做 Holland ， 則 不 必 加 the
， 例 如 ： Have you ever been to Holland / the Netherlands ？ （ 你 有 沒 有
去 過 荷 蘭 ？ ） 留 意 the United states 等 習 慣 配 單 數 形 式 動 詞 ， 例
如 ： Is the Philippines a democracy ？ （ 菲 律 賓 是 不 是 民 主 國 家 ？ ）
此 外 有 幾 個 國 家 的 名 字 比 較 特 殊 ， 要 加 the: the Ukraine （ 烏 克
蘭 ） 、 the Vatican （ 梵 蒂 岡 ） 、 the Gambia （ 甘 比 亞 ） 。
You are welcome 是 「 歡 迎 你 」 ， You are more than welcome 是 歡 迎 還 是
不 歡 迎 ？
You are more than welcome 即 「 非 常 歡 迎 你 」 。 More than 用 在 形 容 詞
、 名 詞 之 前 ， 有 「 非 常 」 、 「 不 止 是 」 含 義 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ）
I was more than annoyed by their loud talk in the library （ 他 們 在 圖 書
館 裡 高 聲 說 話 ， 令 我 非 常 不 滿 ） 。 （ 2 ） Gandhi was more than a
statesman. He was a saint （ 甘 地 不 止 是 政 治 家 ， 更 是 位 聖 人 ） 。
