The fate of the tanks launched off the coast of Normandy on D-Day,1944, was
disastrous. Equipped to float with impermeable canvas skirts, these tanks
were to propel themselves to the beach with an ad hoc propellor and then
resume normal operation. That at least was the theory. But they were set down
too far from land, doubtless because of fear of encountering enemy fire.
Twenty-seven tanks sank in the high seas with their complete crews, a
sacrifice to stubborn hope, for tank after tank was launched to sink like a
stone, observed by everyone on the launching ship.

【 附 注 】 一 九 四 四 年 六 月 六 日 ， 盟 軍 開 始 大 舉 反 攻 德 國 ， 這
一 天 英 文 稱 為 D-Day ， 第 一 個 D 無 非 Day 的 縮 寫 。 這 說 法 和 第 一
次 世 界 大 戰 時 以 H-hour 表 示 「 展 開 軍 事 行 動 時 刻 」 相 似 。 現 在
， D-Day 常 用 來 說 「 決 勝 的 日 子 」 ， 例 如 ： For the two political
parties, tomorrow is D-Day: the election day （ 明 天 是 選 舉 日 ， 是 那 兩
個 政 黨 決 勝 負 的 日 子 ） 。 留 意 D-Day 不 用 冠 詞 the 。
