講題 A Reliability Model for Hard Disk Drivers
摘要
Assessing reliability of products involving nano-scale structures is one
of the key issues in the development of engineering products and high-tech
applications. A common example is the hard disk drive(HDD) which is a
typical micro-mechatronics system.In collaboration with Seagate
Technology$B!G(Bs Design Centre in Singapore),we develop a reliability model
for particle-induced failures in hard disk drive(HDD) based on failue data
resulting from a series of experimentations.This is motivated by the fact
that more than 40% of early failures in HDD is due to particles. These
particles are typically trapped during production or are generated in HDDs
due to wear between contacting interfaces. Cinsidering how failures could be
triggered in HDD, we establish a generic time scale, the cumulative particle
counts (CPC), which is consistent with the observed particle-induced failure
phenomenon in HDDs. From the experimental data, the failue distribution of
the CPC is established and a plausible CPC growth model for prime HDD is
determinde empirically so that the time-to-failure (TIF) distribution can be
obtained. Finally, an example illustrating the use of this generic time-scale
for design selection and reliability assessments across differnet vintages of
HDDs will be prese
