The Mario Kart 3DS demo at E3 begins with a familiar character and kart selection screen. After this you have some new choices to make: A pair of tires and a hang glider attachment that serves to extend your air time in the game. An occasional distraction ("Is this Wu Hu Island from Wii Sports Resort?" "Whoa, it's those enemies from Donkey Kong Country Returns!") didn't stop me from claiming first place easily and keeping it. Seasoned Mario Kart fans have been conditioned by the half-dozen previous iterations to avoid water, and the lengthy reset animation that follows a plunge, but in certain courses in Mario Kart 3DS you can cruise through submerged segments of track thanks to a new propeller that pops up on the rear of the Kart. Beyond the initial surprise, though, maneuvering in the water wasn't that much different from land. The advantage of longer air time, and the ability to maneuver slightly while aireborn, seems to be the ability to snag more coins, which litter the various tracks and are abundant in the air above. These coins appeared in the original Super Mario Kart and the Game Boy Advance version, Mario Kart Super Circuit, but they haven't appeared in recent entries. In those games, collecting coins increased your top speed.
